Birds in the Ica desert

In 2007, the book "Birds in the Ica desert, the Agrokasa experience" was published, a document that compiles the results of observations of various bird species in the Ica farms, with a technical analysis of their evolution and trends.

Among the main scopes we have the following: The practice of falconry as a method of biological control through the use of hawks, who discourage predatory birds from crops such as grapes with a high degree of efficiency; the preparation of an inventory of bird species that inhabit the La Catalina and Santa Rita farms, as well as the development of synergies between business and scientific activity.

Efficiency And Sustainability Of Water Use

Best Water Saving Techniques

Our operations have a drip irrigation system, which allows for better efficiency in the use and exploitation of this water resource, in addition, it guarantees that the application of water to the plants is optimal in quantity and timing. Our piped irrigation systems prevent losses due to evaporation and infiltration.

Wastewater treatment plant (PTAR)

In August 2020, Agrokasa began construction of the Wastewater Treatment Plant (PTAR) in Ica, which is designed to operate 365 days a year and 24 hours a day. This project will be one of the most modern in the region and will provide multiple benefits for the community, the environment and the agricultural sector.

Test Pits

The water to be used for crops intended for human consumption must be stored in a cool place, away from chemical and cleaning products to prevent them from taking on odors of substances that cannot be detected in the air. In this way, it is important to pay attention to the characteristics with which the water is stored.

Surface Water Use

Surface water is collected and then goes through a complete treatment system that begins with: flocculation and coagulation, to remove a large part of the impurities; followed by sedimentation lagoons, to remove the sand; and finally through the gravel filters, before entering the fields. Disinfection with hydrogen peroxide serves to protect the water against microorganisms and contaminants that could enter through the pipes. It is worth mentioning that the availability of surface water depends on the seasonality in each of the venues.

Integrated pest management

Currently, the Agro-food industry promotes the development of these practices and at AGK the MIP has been used since our company began.

We use beneficial predatory insects such as Phytoseidae mites,

Lacewings, as well as parasitoids such as trichogramma sp and tetrastichus wasps.

The use of control nematodes such as heterorhabditis for pest insects that inhabit the soil.

For each crop there is an ecosystem where plants, pests and their biocontrols develop, so we have different species of beneficial insects depending on the case.

Falconry

Falconry is the activity of hunting with birds of prey, especially with hawks, hawks and other birds of prey to capture poultry or ground species. Biologically it is a symbiosis between man and animal, a relationship in which both species.

Preservation Zone

They are intangible areas within our farms where flora and fauna thrive. Also included are areas of high conservation value, such as those places where there are archaeological remains (Fundos Las Mercedes and Santa Rita).

Desert birds of the Central Coast of Peru

For more than twenty years, Agrokasa began the study and surveillance of birds in its operations centers (Barranca and Ica). In this second book, the results of ten years of continuous scientific research in the Agrokasa farms located in Barranca and Ica are presented.

It is worth mentioning that the great diversity of birds present in both farms exceeds one hundred species identified, this provides valuable and important information for specialists such as ornithologists and professionals in the various areas of science associated with biology and the like.
